Matrix Guangzhou Chemicals Corp.
Matrix was the original inventor and producer of preform antimony catalyst for the PET polycondensation reaction. Matrix has captured more than 65% of the preform catalysts market worldwide, with customers located all around the world in more than 20 countries, including the United States, Canada, Eastern and Western Europe, Russia, Middle East, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, China, etc. PET is used largely in fibers for clothing and in industrial applications such as safety belts, tire cords, etc.. PET is used as film in packaging, labels, etc.. PET is also a key raw material for beverage and food packaging (bottles).
Matrix's heritage is with M&T Chemicals Inc., which, through mergers, consolidations, and public listings, became Atochem, Elf Atochem, Atofina and Arkema.
In April 2009, Arkema S.A., divested the Guangzhou operation and sold 100% of its share positions to Matrix Investments (China) Ltd. and was renamed Matrix Guangzhou Chemicals Co., Ltd ：
Back in the mid 1970’s, M&T developed a new antimony preform catalyst, based on antimony triacetate (S-21®), to replace antimony oxide in PET process. S-21® significantly reduced the contaminant metals and able to enhance the efficiencies of the polycondensation polymerization process as well as to minimize line breaks during the POY and DTY processes over the oxides, resulting in improved PET quality and performance. S-21® also improves the color performance in bottles applications. Zimmer recognized the benefits of S21 and established a joint development efforts with M&T Chemicals. Zimmer specified S-21® as the catalyst of choice in their turn key engineering projects. The partnership between Zimmer and M&T chemicals has lead to a worldwide recognition and confirmation of S-21® preform catalyst in PET applications.
